Known primarily for his role as the servant “Pork” in Gone With The Wind, Polk had extensive stage credits including the Pulitzer Prize-winning  You Can’t Take It with You. In 1949, he was set to appear in the play, Leading Lady, when he was struck and killed by a taxi in Times Square in New York City. He was replaced in the play by Ossie Davis.
