Dancer, choreographer and scholar Pearl Primus. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad in 1919, she did not begin dancing until she was a pre-med student in New York City, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Hunter College and a Ph.D in anthropology and sociology from New York University. Primus was known for weaving history and social commentary into her dances, especially “Strange Fruit” and “The Negro Speaks of Rivers.”
